BOUNERGY, a global leader in lithium battery and energy storage solutions, has announced a landmark collaboration with ECCO SOLAR, a South African pioneer in renewable energy services, to co-develop integrated solar-plus-storage projects across Africa. This partnership aims to address the continent’s urgent energy access challenges while capitalizing on its vast solar potential, projected to exceed 9GW of installed capacity by 2025.
Bridging Energy Gaps with Hybrid Solutions
Africa’s solar market is experiencing exponential growth, with 2.5GW of new installations in 2024 and 20% of projects now incorporating battery storage. BOUNERGY’s advanced lithium-ion battery systems, known for their 5,000+ cycle life and rapid charging capabilities, will be paired with ECCO SOLAR’s high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) panels. The hybrid systems target 30% cost savings over traditional diesel generators and aim to reduce grid instability in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, where 600 million people lack reliable electricity.
Leveraging Local Expertise and Global Innovation
ECCO SOLAR, with its deep roots in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, brings localized knowledge of Africa’s regulatory frameworks and grid infrastructure. The company has already deployed solar solutions in rural communities and industrial hubs, aligning with South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to phase out coal dependency. BOUNERGY complements this with its modular ESS-5000 energy storage systems, designed for Africa’s harsh climates and capable of operating at temperatures up to 45°C.
“This partnership merges BOUNERGY’s cutting-edge storage technology with our on-the-ground experience,” said CEO of ECCO SOLAR. “Together, we’re not just installing panels—we’re building resilient microgrids that empower communities and industries.”
Focus on High-Growth Markets
The collaboration will prioritize markets with burgeoning solar demand:
1.South Africa: Leading the continent with 3.74GW of solar capacity in 2023, the nation’s relaxed permitting processes and tax incentives make it a strategic launchpad.
2.Egypt: Home to the Kom Ombo Abydos project—Africa’s largest single-site solar plant—Egypt offers opportunities for utility-scale deployments.
3.Nigeria and Morocco: These markets are driving demand for commercial and industrial (C&I) solar solutions to offset rising electricity costs.
A pilot project in Johannesburg’s East Rand industrial zone will showcase a 5MW solar array coupled with 10MWh of lithium storage, aiming to reduce energy costs for manufacturers by 40%.
Sustainability and Economic Impact
Beyond energy access, the partnership emphasizes job creation and skill development. BOUNERGY and ECCO SOLAR plan to establish a training academy in Cape Town to equip local technicians with expertise in PV installation and battery maintenance—a critical step given Africa’s projected 3GWh annual storage demand by 2026.
The alliance also aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which prioritizes sustainable industrialization. By replacing diesel generators, the projects could cut carbon emissions by 250,000 tons annually across targeted regions.
